The power of air conditioning is easy to appreciate on scorching hot day in the middle of summer. However, blasting the A/C isn’t the only way to stay cool in Charlotte. Follow these good old fashioned tips from Patterson to stay cool without air conditioning.
1. Fire up the grill
Have your friends and family over for a backyard barbecue, and you can kill two birds with one stone: keep your home cooler, and enjoy delicious food on a beautiful summer day! Your oven and stove can raise the temperature in your home, making it almost unbearable. Cook outside and keep your home comfortable this summer.
2. Take a water break
There is no more simple way to keep yourself cool than by drinking lots of water. Instead of trying to regulate your home’s temperature, why not start with your own body? Water acts as a cooling fluid to keep your body cool on hot days. Pour yourself a glass of ice water to stay nice and cool.
3. Upgrade your lightbulbs
Traditional, incandescent light bulbs emit large amounts of heat, which can raise your home’s temperature. Switch to CFLs that provide brighter light at a lower temperature. CFLs also use less energy, cutting down on utility bills for some welcome summer savings.
4. Go off the grid
Okay, not literally. But, it’s important to realize that all electronic devices give off a certain level of heat. Therefore, the more you can unplug, the cooler your house will be. Unplug computers, TVs, and any other electronic devices when not in use in order to keep your living spaces cool this summer.
5. Stay cool in the basement
Want to stay cool this summer? Follow the cold air! Cold air moves below warm air, so the lowest area in your house will typically be the coolest. This makes the basement an excellent place to take refuge from a heat wave. Still, many of us can’t bear staying inside on a beautiful summer day. Fortunately, there are countless ways to stay cool in Charlotte. Visit the U.S. National Whitewater Center, or take a dip in one of the many local pools. On a hot summer day, there’s nowhere we would rather be than Charlotte, NC!
