Heating & FurnaceInfo ArticlesTips for Identifying When a Heat Pump Replacement is Needed

Let’s face it, no homeowner enjoys the cost associated with a heat pump replacement but sometimes it is a necessity. The decision for a heat pump replacement is not just because it’s not putting out heat. Actually, your unit may seem to be working fine, but your energy and fuel bills have been rising faster than anticipated. In this case, it may actually save more to replace your unit than to continue using it.

Tips for Identifying When a Heat Pump Replacement is Needed

  • Your unit needs frequent repairs. With annual maintenance, most repairs are prevented before they occur. However, if you find that you are calling your heating repair technician more than normal, this is a telltale sign that you should start considering a heat pump replacement.
  • Your unit is more than eight years old. Most of the older units were less efficient and use more fuel for doing the same job as the newer models. Just like computer technology has changed rapidly in the last ten years, heat pump technology has also changed and incorporated more computer modules than ever before. Newer units have a higher efficiency rating and use less fuel, saving you more money in the long run.
  • Inadequate heating or cooling. While your unit may have worked perfectly five years ago, you now find that some rooms of your home are too cold and others rooms are too hot. While this could be an issue with your ductwork or insulation, it could also be an issue with the unit, as well. Additionally, your unit could be working harder to heat or cool the specific rooms (depending on where the uneven distribution is) creating even more wear and tear on the unit itself.
  • Your EPA’s Home Energy Yardstick is less than five. The EPA’s Home Energy Yardstick calculates your home’s energy use for the last twelve months and gives it a score from 0 to 10. The lower the number the more energy your home is using. You will need the last 12 months of your energy bills to calculate your home’s energy use. If you are a Duke Energy client, they also send out regular statements showing how your home compares to others in your neighborhood. If you are above average on these statements, then it is probably a good time to call about a heat pump replacement.
