These Energy Saving Tips will keep you more comfortable this summer and save you money.

  1. Set your home’s thermostat to the a warmer setting, typically 74 – 78 degrees.  It can cost you 1-3% more in utility costs for each degree cooler you set your thermostat.
  2. Schedule Spring Maintenance on your air conditioner or heat pump system.  Dirty indoor and outdoor coils contribute to increased energy costs and potential equipment breakdowns.
  3. Change your air filters regularly, dirty and clogged air filters restrict air flow which causes your system to work harder.
  4. Close blinds or curtains during the day to save on cooling costs.
  5. Don’t leave bath fans running, they will pull cool air from the home into unconditioned areas.
  6. Reduce air infiltration into the home by adding weather stripping and caulking around windows and doors.
  7. Check your attic insulation.  R30 is the current standard, almost every home can use additional insulation.
  8. Make sure your ceiling fans are turning counter-clockwise to push air down to the floor.
  9. Invest in a Programmable Thermostat to set the home’s temperature warmer while you are away from home.
  10. If your home’s outdoor A/C or Heat Pump is surrounded by shrubs, let it breathe!  You A/C or Heat Pump outdoor unit is trying to remove hot air from your home.  If the unit is covered by foliage it will make it work harder and can cause premature wear and tear on the components.
